What are the key differences between NPB and MLB?

What are the key differences between NPB and MLB?

Curious about what makes NPB and MLB different? Explore the key differences between the top two leagues including their rules.

NPB vs MLB: What are their key differences?

The Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and the Major League Baseball (MLB) are the top pro baseball leagues in Japan and the United States, respectively. While they are both elite baseball tournaments, there are key differences between them.

Key takeaways

  • NPB vs MLB: NPB tends to have a more aggressive playstyle, with more bunting and stealing bases while MLB has a more power-focused style.
  • The NPB season is shorter with around 143 games, compared to the 162-game MLB season.

To give you an idea, here’s your guide to the key distinctions between the two:

How did MLB and NPB start?

Baseball started as an informal game in the States during the 1800s. In 1876, the National League was formed as the first pro baseball league, giving the sport more structure and rules.

In 1876 and 1901, respectively, the American League (AL) and National League (NL) were formed, sparking competition. However, in 2000, they merged into one body called Major League Baseball (MLB).

Over the years, MLB League expanded to include more teams across the United States and Canada. It has remained the top and oldest pro baseball league since then.

On the other hand, baseball was introduced to Japan by American sailors and teachers in 1872. By the early 1900s, various amateur baseball MLB teams had formed across the country.

In 1934, the Greater Japan Tokyo Baseball Club, which was the first pro baseball team in Japan, was formed. Two years later,  the Japanese Baseball League (JBL) was founded and continued to play through World War II.

It was then restructured in 1950 and renamed the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league. The NPB  League had two main divisions: the Central League and the Pacific League.

Difference between NPB and MLB

The NPB and MLB are the two best baseball leagues in the world of baseball. While there are many similarities between the two, they also have some key differences including:

Season length

The NPB season is shorter than the MLB season. NPB teams play around 143 games per season, while MLB teams play 162 games. This means the NPB season goes by a bit faster and the playoffs start sooner.

Pitching

NPB pitchers often rely more on breaking balls and off-speed pitches, while MLB pitchers tend to have more overpowering fastballs. This is partly due to the smaller field dimensions in NPB requiring a different approach.

Roster size

MLB teams have 40 players under contract with the team, and 26 of those players are on their current rosters. If a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the active roster, they are often either on the injured list or moved to the team's Triple-A minor league affiliate.

On the other hand, each NPB team has 28 players on its list, but only 25 can play in a game at a time. Similar to pro basketball, managers scratch three players before each game. MLB teams also have five-man rotations for starting pitchers, while most NPB teams have six.

League format

MLB's end-of-season championship is the World Series. It's a best-of-seven series, and a team has to win four games to win the title. The NPB's title is the Japan Series, which is also a best-of-seven matchup.

The games can end in a tie which means it can take longer than seven games to determine the winner. If the series has to go on longer, games after Game 7 are played with no innings limits. Game 8 is played at the same venue as Game 7, and games after Game 9 are played at the opposing team's venue.

Gameplay

NPB games tend to have more bunting and small ball tactics where players try to advance runners and score runs through sacrifices and well-placed hits. On the other hand, MLB games often have a more power-oriented style, with more home runs and extra-base hits.

Foreign players

NPB teams are limited to 4 foreign players on their active roster. On the other hand, MLB has no limits, with rosters composed of players from around the world.

What to consider when choosing between NPB and MLB?

Are you a fan of baseball betting and can’t decide which one to support between NPB and MLB? To help you maximise your betting experience and your baseball betting odds, here are some factors to consider:

  • Level of competition → MLB is considered the highest level of pro baseball worldwide. NPB is also very strong, but a step below MLB.
  • Path to the majors → For many players, going to MLB is the ultimate goal. The NPB can be a good stepping stone to eventually reach MLB.
  • Travel and schedule → The NPB schedule is generally less demanding with fewer games. MLB teams travel more and play more games in a season.
