What is a Bitcoin ETF?
A Bitcoin ETF refers to securities offered at exchanges used to track Bitcoin prices. It’s not the same as owning and using the asset like managing your Gamdom bankrolls for playing Bitcoin casino games or trading at exchanges.
If you invest in a spot ETF, you are not buying the asset featured. Instead, you give funds to the exchange which will trade Bitcoin on your behalf and you get your share at regular intervals.
This system operates because the SEC has allowed trading ETFs in both spots and futures for BTC. It is all that the SEC could make a regulatory framework for which they have begun working, with encouragement from the US Senate, since Q3 of 2023. That endeavour now bears fruit in 2024 and Bitcoin investors worldwide benefit from its strong price and liquidity boom.
As of now, there are only ETFs for Bitcoin. Interest in other cryptocurrencies is growing, especially Ethereum (ETH) and its role in the development of Web 3.0. ETH ETFs were proposed alongside Bitcoin ETFs in 2023 and the SEC is studying it but they decided to start with the world’s most widely adopted digital asset first.
Why is Bitcoin ETF so popular among institutional investors today?
Institutional investors have always been interested in the speculative potential of cryptocurrencies. However, they exercise strict caution given digital assets’ lack of regulatory framework and their risk management cannot afford crypto in their portfolio. The introduction of Bitcoin ETFs made profiting from its speculative nature more streamlined and secure.
The approval of Bitcoin ETFs led to the asset’s price surpassing its $64,000 peak in 2022 as it proceeded to reach beyond $70,000. Thus, the first investors were the ones who benefited from the SEC’s decision the most. Hedge funds are aiming to capitalise on this trend, as well, and that’s why they are endorsing it to today’s investors.
