Valve Corporation is shaking up the esports scene with the announcement of Counter-Strike 2. Here’s what you need to know about the new game.

Guide to Counter Strike 2 A new era for FPS esports

Game developer and publisher, Valve Corporation, has led the first-person shooter (FPS) genre with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) for decades. Now, they are releasing a sequel to stoke the flames of passionate fans of its franchise. This game is Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) and it’s coming in 2023.

The announcement for Counter-Strike 2 was announced on 23rd March 2023. It showcases new features that improve Counter-Strike gameplay and it also adds new features. This new instalment of the top FPS game series has thrilled the esports world which is why players and fans are on the lookout for more updates about it.

To give you an introduction to CS2, here’s what you need to know:

What is Counter-Strike 2?

Counter-Strike 2 is the fifth official instalment of its series but it’s going to be a free upgrade for CSGO (2012). It will continue the multiplayer-focused experience in the FPS genre that people know and love. Counter-Strike 2 release date is announced to be sometime between 30th June and mid-September 2023 and Valve is already conducting Beta testing with pro players.

CS2 will take over CSGO tournaments like the Major Championships (Majors) with full support from Valve and its partners. Esports teams have also shared their interest in joining the new competitive landscape which can offer a refreshing environment for the professional scene.

What’s new with Counter-Strike 2?

Beta testers and developers have delivered insights into the new mechanics of Counter-Strike 2. All of which raised questions on their implications for competitive FPS which excites both casual and professional gamers alike. Likewise, it’s also bound to shake up esports betting on Gamdom players worldwide. Here are the exciting Counter-Strike 2 details you need to know:

Built on Source Engine 2 engine

Valve’s Source Engine 2 isn’t entirely new. It was first released in 2015 and the first game to officially launch on it is Dota 2 (2013). The port was a free update called ‘Dota 2 Reborn’ which revamped the game’s graphics and optimisation. Counter-Strike 2 is estimated to get an even bigger overhaul and that’s why Valve decided to call it a new game rather than a major update.

Counter-Strike 2 system requirements have already been announced. Generally, it is still playable on low-end PCs using Windows 7, 2GB RAM, and DirectX version 9. Processor requirement is still Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6600 and it’s still 256 MB for graphics video cards.

Updated maps

Revamps to old maps and introduction of new ones are among the most expected changes to CS2. This gameplay content is enough to change the nature of the game completely. Besides retextures and updated lighting, there will also be new pathing plans for every location. Every player will need to relearn all of these at the start of the new competitive season.

New loadout system

The loadout system used in CSGO has gone through major changes for every patch. However, this upcoming upgrade with CS2 is going to change how you understand guns. Terrorists and counter-terrorists now have a shared pool of guns instead of having mutually exclusive selections.

The guns are also divided neatly into three categories: pistols, mid-ranged weapons, and rifles. It’s more streamlined than the original shop menu where guns are subdivided into what type of firearm they are. Submachine guns can now be found with shotguns under mid-range while rifles carry assault rifles and snipers alike.

New sub-tick system

This element is a lot harder to notice for casual players but pro gamers and esports bettors see this as a key part of a team’s performance. A ‘tick’ is a measure of time dividing every frame of the game and CSGO uses this to synchronise every player’s screen. Thus, a shot can be delayed depending on when the player clicked the button.

Source Engine 2 made Counter-Strike 2 more responsive than CSGO, allowing players to shoot exactly as when they pressed the trigger button. It will no longer be delayed to wait for the next tick. Instead, the gun shoots within the sub-tick to provide more precise timing. This opens a new avenue for gaming where reflexes become more vital to gunplay than rhythm.

Responsive smoke system

The new standout feature in Counter-Strike 2 is the update on how smokes work. Firstly, the smoke now looks thicker thanks to its volumetric feature to make it more visible when seen from a distance. Secondly, the smoke now clears on the part where it’s shot at, allowing new strategies that involve baiting or discourage blind firing.

The dynamic smoke also interacts with the environment in many ways. It fills narrow halls and collisions with objects prevent it from passing through to the other side. Smoke also becomes lighter or darker depending on the lighting available where it appears. Frag grenades can also clear smoke effectively, thus encouraging other uses for utility items.

Visceral details and destructible environment

This new element raised concerns about CS2’s age rating. Now, bloodstains can appear on the ground dynamically with how each character is wounded in combat. It is visually impressive and logically sound but blood splatters are typically censored in many countries like China.

On the flip side, this can be used as a tactical aid because blood splatters can be tracked to someone hiding. Destructible environment also helps determine where a shooter is firing from, giving players more information to use to track each other. Otherwise, it’s also just a detail players and viewers alike can appreciate.

Return of the wallbang

The ‘wallbang’ is simply the act of shooting through a wall and hitting or eliminating an enemy from the other side. This feature was first introduced in Counter-Strike 1.6 but was omitted in CSGO as a design decision. Its inclusion opens new challenges and strategies for all gamers because players can hide but they’re not safe from gunfire.

Wallbangs are only possible on certain surfaces. Criteria include that the wall must be paper thin and that they need to be textured like a wall that can’t stop bullets. A few examples include thin sheets of metal like the side of a shipping container or locked doors.

What does Counter-Strike 2 mean for CSGO esports?

CSGO will no longer be available on Steam once CS2 releases because the former will be updated into the latter. It’s a full replacement, not a new game. Thus, it will carry on all Counter-Strike major tournaments including community, domestic, and international leagues.

The new update is revamping graphics, gameplay elements, and optimisation for Counter-Strike. However, how will this affect the esports scene as a whole? Here are a few ideas that fans have discussed online:

Offers a new fresh take on an old, beloved game

Counter-Strike is the game that developed how FPS esports are played today so every new title aiming to join that industry is compared to it. However, it is showing its ageing mechanics, even in its latest game CSGO. Granted, it’s still more popular than modern shooters like Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and Overwatch but its fame is threatened by VALORANT.

CSGO quickly aged when compared to Riot Games's new FPS and fans were hoping for their favourite game to keep up with modern times. That’s why Valve needed CS2. The company has been working on the game for so long but kept the project hidden until 2023. Now, the FPS esports hype returned to Counter-Strike and Valve is the king of FPS games again.

Major update in the meta

Besides the gameplay experience, the competitive scene is also looking stale for esports fans. Gamdom punters have their favourite teams remain the same for almost every season and CSGO hardly balances its game to make room for new teams to rise to prominence. That’s why esports fans are excited about all of the overhauls Counter-Strike 2 has featured in the showcase.

Esports bettors and gamers alike would have to review new gameplay elements. Besides changes made to how guns work, they should also see how they interact with other features. It’s possible that meta analysers will examine which guns are better for clearing smoke or what’s the best way to use utility items. Loadout will also be a key factor in players’ effectiveness.

Gives way to new contenders in the competitive scene

The effects CS2’s changes have on the meta are bound to change how pro players are scaled. Skills and strategies that made FaZe Clan, SK Gaming, or HEROIC the best in CSGO may not help them much in the new game. It’s an exciting new avenue for a new competitive season, especially for punters. Underdogs have a great chance of winning the tournaments in 2023/24.

Look forward to Counter-Strike esports at Gamdom

Counter-Strike 2 release date is slated for Summer 2023, ensuring that the game will take over the 2023/24 competitive season for CSGO. This means that there will be no major changes to esports betting options and promotions at Gamdom.
