World-beaters: The best League of Legends teams in history

League of Legends is a game with a rich history in its esports circuit. Over the past decade, certain teams have stood out and could be considered all-time greats. Any League esports fan should know more about the teams that set the gold standard for today’s competitors.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

• League of Legends has plenty of teams that can be considered the best like T1 and Invictus Gaming, who both have legendary resumes as top teams in the League circuit.
• T1 is at the top of the mountain due to their longevity paired with success, but you have plenty of teams to choose from.
• The League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) is a big part of how teams are seen as successful in the League of Legends circuit.

League of Legends esports is filled to the brim with some superb teams across its more-than-a-decade history. But some are considered the best LOL teams of all time.

What makes a great League of Legends team?

If you’re interested in League of Legends esports, you should know how to identify how good a certain team is. When you look into the circuit, some teams stand out because of their skills and performance. Of course, this can depend on the current metagame since there are teams who have unbelievable accolades.

Some boxes need to be ticked to identify the top teams. Here are the characteristics of the best League of Legends teams in the circuit’s history:

• Seamless team chemistry - Any competitive team finds a way to succeed, but in League of Legends, five players must thrive together. If they have lacklustre chemistry, they won’t succeed no matter how good the players are.
• Individual players have limitless skill ceilings - A team becomes challenging to face when they have multiple players considered the best in their position since they only have to sort out the chemistry and tactics. It can be challenging to blend them, but the best teams do it well.
• Good coaching - Like any other competitive team in sports and esports, coaches play a huge role as they set up the team to win games and tournaments. They also know how to manage every player to help them stand out and play at their highest level.
• Consistency - Any team must be consistent enough to perform at their peak performance. If they can continue to play at a high level across an entire season or even multiple years, that makes for a good team composed of motivated players.
• Significant support from the organisation - The players and coaches are not alone in their plight for silverware as they also have the organisation fighting for them. The team behind the players must set them up for success, which can be done through financial and moral support or infrastructure.

Who is the best League of Legends team in history?

Since League of Legends became a top esports game in 2011, some teams have stood out. All the League of Legends esports teams are focused on winning accolades and trophies to cement their legacies as all-time greats. However, only a select few have earned that kind of honour.

Have a look at some of the best teams that have played Riot Games’ flagship game:

T1 (2013, 2015-16, and 2023-24)

Considered one of the big dogs, T1 (formerly SK Telecom), have been the dominant side in League of Legends. They are unanimously called the best League of Legends team ever due to their consistent success across multiple eras of the game. This team is a dynasty because of its longevity and how decorated they are compared to others.

At the heart of success is Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok, who is widely considered the greatest player in League of Legends history. He has a tremendous skill ceiling, as he could adapt to any situation and outplay almost every player he matched up against.

T1 has five World Championship titles in their history, by far the most out of any team in the circuit. Faker has been present across all five championships, cementing himself as the most successful player. Of course, he was not alone across those title runs since other talented players have been with him.

Names like Bae ‘Bengi’ Seong-woong, Ryu ‘Keria’ Min-seok, Lee ‘Gumayusi’ Min-hyeong, and more have all succeeded with T1 in League. Every T1 team is known for their ability to thrive in high-pressure situations since no matter how difficult it gets, they find ways to succeed and prove why they are the true dynasty in League of Legends.

Samsung White (2014)

In what is considered the most dominant Worlds run in history, Samsung White pulled off a fantastic win in the 2014 edition of the world’s biggest esports event. Every player on the roster was arguably the best in their position during that run since they did not show any sign of weakness.

Macro play was a big part of their success as they knew how to work together as a team without any issues. Every gank the opponent tried to do was snuffed out as Samsung White had the best rotations out of any team.

Their control of the vision around the map suffocated every opponent, and these all led to the Worlds run with only two losses. All their opponents tried to find a way to solve the Samsung White puzzle, but they could not come close to doing so. That was why they won Worlds, which is still so fondly remembered a decade later.

Cho ‘Mata’ Se-hyeong is now coaching T1, but in 2014, he was arguably the fiercest player. Mata was a standout support player, who was always prepared to beat his opponents. He loved to roam to use his abilities, but he also did that to dominate the vision control.

Mata remains an influential player as most supports follow what he did in 2014. Samsung White remains a legendary team, and they will always be looked back on as an industry leader.

Invictus Gaming (2018)

In 2018, Invictus Gaming became the first non-South Korean team to win Worlds. It was a huge turning point for League of Legends as they proved this game is more than just one country. China’s League of Legends scene became the most impressive for a while, cementing themselves as good contenders to South Korea.

For iG, they helped define the game with their focus on dominating the laning phase. They wanted to build early leads and ensure the players could have strengths before the teamfights even happened. When those teamfights happened, iG always thrived as they worked well with their aggression.

Raw mechanical skill and aggression kept them in the game almost every time, as they became more unpredictable and dangerous. South Korean import Kang ‘TheShy’ Seung-lok was a big part of their success as he was a consistent star in the top lane. He always had an impact on iG, cementing himself as a mainstay in the team for years to come.

They had a dominant 2018, as they won Worlds in a sweep against Fnatic. It was one of the most impressive victories in League history and had been influential for multiple years. China is always the biggest contender against South Korea, while European teams are the third-best.

DWG KIA (2020-2021)

After some years of South Korea struggling to get back to top form, DWG KIA (formerly DAMWON Gaming) rekindled the flame. South Korea was back on top due to their 2020 World Championship victory and almost won it back-to-back in 2021, but they fell short in the Final to plucky underdogs EDward Gaming.

DWG was always a talented team, but their biggest strength had to be their balance in the roster. While they had a star player, Heo ‘ShowMaker’ Su, they also had some amazing names alongside him like Kim ‘Canyon’ Geon-bu, who was a world-class jungler.

The play style was a big part of why they were so successful since they combined the classic disciplined South Korean style with the aggression in the Chinese style. During their peak, they were influential, as most teams in the circuit tried to replicate what they did.

This team was an unstoppable force until they lost in 2021 to the underdogs. It was a surprising loss as it lessened the rich legacy, but DWG is still remembered as one of the best in history.

EDward Gaming (2021)

As one of the greatest Cinderella stories in esports, EDward Gaming (EDG) had a magical run in 2021 since they won the World Championship as an underdog. They defied expectations to be known as the champion in 2021, cementing themselves by beating both DWG and T1 en route to the title, which is still considered by many as one of the best esports moments ever.

The victory proved good teamwork is a big reason behind their resilient success. They had overcome raw star power from the other teams with lesser-known players. EDG did not have the best player in any of their roles, but they played with exceptional cohesiveness.

While they were not the stars, the combination in the bot lane between Park ‘Viper’ Do-hyeon and Tian ‘Meiko’ Ye was the key to their success. Viper is known as one of the most mechanically gifted players in the world, and that combined well with Meiko’s prolific leadership and playmaking as a support player. They secured some important wins for EDG, getting them to the Worlds Final stage.

Across all these teams, T1 is probably the top esports LOL team, but the other teams performing well should tell any fan that League is one of the deepest esports circuits. Since they have the most players out of any esports circuit, League has remained one of the talent-laden esports in the world.
