About Chainlink: How does it work and is it worth investing in?

The digital world is ever-changing and growing. It has demands, limitations, and challenges that need to be addressed. Once solutions are created, changes take place, and the cycle goes and on. This is the innovative objective of Chainlink, and here’s everything you need to know about it and its Chainlink crypto coin.

Today is an exciting time for the digital world because of the new iteration of Web3, a World Wide Web service based on blockchain technology. It is a massive space that incorporates concepts of decentralisation and token-based economics, thereby guaranteeing security, trust, and transparency.

Blockchain is a promising technology today and in the years to come, as experts believe that it will revolutionise financial sectors like real estate, healthcare, and law. Yet before it can thrive successfully and continuously, investors must address its several various adoption challenges. Notable examples include low scalability, high energy consumption, and the ebb and flow of information that creates vulnerabilities.

Since blockchain is its own universe, getting information (e.g. price feeds of digital currencies, event results, and links to traditional payment systems) to and from the outside network has created exposure. This results in the need to trust a source outside the blockchain for the sake of obtaining accurate information. This is where Chainlink comes into play. As the term literally suggests, it is an Oracle network that links off-chain and on-chain data for the masses. It can help blockchain by redefining the future of the decentralised finance world.

Brief history of Chainlink

Before we dive into the specifics of what is Chainlink crypto, let’s first understand how, where, and when it originated.

Online entrepreneur Sergey Nazarov and software engineer Steve Ellis founded and launched Chainlink in 2017, and they also co-founded the network’s parent company called SmartContract. According to their authored white paper, Chainlink functions as a ‘bridge’ between a blockchain and an off-chain environment. Meaning to say, users can refer to it in verifying whether the parameters of a smart contract are satisfied in a way that is independent of any of the contract's stakeholders.

How Chainlink works

Now, you might be wondering what Chainlink means by bridging the gap between ‘off-chain’ and ‘on-chain’ resources. Don’t miss these out because they are the network's two biggest features.

Oracle nodes that reside outside of the Chainlink network and are linked to an external blockchain are referred to as ‘off-chain’ resources. They are responsible for collecting the data required by the user.

Once confirmed, the requested data is sent through 'Chainlink Core,' which is a piece of software that connects Off-chain data to the Chainlink network. The processed data is then retrieved by Chainlink Core and sent to the on-chain Oracle. This time, ‘on-chain’ resources do most of their work by examining and processing user requests for Off-chain data presented to the blockchain. Finally, the requests are sent to the relevant smart contract.

That being said, Chainlink was also designed to communicate with oracles that do not run on its blockchain and instead are responsible for obtaining the real-world data sought by the contracts on their own. Their nodes are composed of two parts:

  • Chainlink Core → This is in charge of reading freshly filed service level agreements (SLAs) and directing them to the Chainlink Adapter.
  • Chainlink Adapter → From the Chainlink Core, this serves as a link between the node and the outside world. It can read, process, and publish data to the blockchain.

Chainlink and its 3 types of smart contracts

There are three types of smart contracts that power the entire Chainlink network, which are as follows:

  1. Aggregating Contracts → Gather data from Oracles and match the most accurate results with the smart contracts that require them.
  2. Order-Matching Contract → This contract matches the SLA of a smart contract with the best bidding oracles.
  3. Reputation Contract → This contract verifies an oracle's integrity by examining its track record. It covers data, such as the total number of completed queries, average response time, and the amount of LINK cryptocurrency staked by the oracle.

Chainlink 2.0: Seven key areas it focuses on

As mentioned above, the digital world is quick and highly innovative with newer, bigger, and even cooler changes. Chainlink’s network was revised into Chainlink 2.0, which was after the second whitepaper that was published on April 15, 2021 by the following authors:

  • Lorenz Breidenbach
  • Christian Cachin
  • Benedict Chan
  • Alex Coventry
  • Steve Ellis
  • Ari Juels
  • Farinaz Koushanfar
  • Andrew Miller
  • Brendan Magauran
  • Daniel Moroz
  • Sergey Nazarov
  • Alexandru Topliceanu
  • Florian Tramer
  • Fan Zhang

Chainlink 2.0 authors created the second whitepaper, entitled ‘Chainlink 2.0: Next Steps in the Evolution of Decentralized Oracle Networks’, due to the forecast of an increasingly expansive role for oracle networks. Its foundation is called ‘Decentralized Oracle Networks’, or DONs for short, and it acts as a powerful abstraction layer that provides interfaces for smart contracts to extensive off-chain resources. Hence, present and future users can welcome and experience highly efficient yet decentralised off-chain computing resources within the entire network itself.

In addition to DON as a springboard, Chainlink 2.0 focuses on advances in the following key areas:

  • Hybrid smart contracts → Enhance smart contract capabilities by securely assembling on-chain and off-chain computing resources into hybrid smart contracts.
  • Abstracting away complexity → Ensure that decentralised oracle networks meet the latency and throughput requirements of high-performance blockchains, layer-2 solutions, and Web2 systems.
  • Scaling → Provide easy functionality to developers and consumers that reduces the need for expertise with sophisticated underlying protocols and system limits.
  • Confidentiality → Catalyse high integrity systems that combine the inherent transparency of blockchains with robust privacy safeguards for sensitive data and computations.
  • Order-fairness for transactions → Enables transaction sequencing in ways that are fair to end users, as well as prevents bots and predatory miners from front-running and other types of value extraction.
  • Trust-minimisation → Decentralisation, cryptographic assurances, and guardrails can be used to create a dependable layer of support for smart contracts and other oracle-dependent systems.
  • Incentive-based (crypto economic) activity → Ensure that nodes in decentralised oracle networks have significant economic incentives to act consistently and accurately, especially when confronted with well-funded opponents.

LINK token

Chainlink compensates node operators with its own digital currency LINK, which is used to incentivise good service inside the network. This is an ERC677 token, which is an extension of Ethereum's ERC20. It may be saved in any ERC20 wallet since ERC677 tokens have the same functions as ERC20 tokens.

LINK tokens serve as data payloads that feed data from off-chain sources to smart contracts. Then, they act based on the data provided by the token. According to their network, their trade value is used to pay node operators for bringing back data from smart contracts, as well as for deposits put by node operators as required by contract creators.

How to buy LINK

Just like in any other digital currency, learning how to buy Chainlink crypto tokens is quick and easy. Here is a simple step-by-step guide to help you get started in exploring the network.

  • Get a LINK wallet → Technically, the wallet used to purchase and pay for LINK is the same wallet used to purchase and pay for other digital currencies. If you already have an account, you can go to the third stage of the process. Those of you who are just getting started, on the other hand, should look for a widely used platform in the business, such as any of the following:
    • Coinbase
    • Stash
    • Coinomi
    • Bittrex
    • Mobi
    • Jaxx
  • Validate your personal information → This is a critical step since, once you've confirmed everything about your personal and financial details, you will be entering a world where privacy is at stake. This is ideal for those who wish to keep their personal information confidential while also concealing their transactions.
  • Buy LINK → Knowing where to buy Chainlink crypto is really rather straightforward once your wallet is set up and ready to go. All you have to do is seek for the cash in your wallet, which is disguised as a stock exchange. LINK will be shown, as well as the current value of each currency. Keep in mind that LINK is traded on several platforms, hence Chainlink crypto analysis is important because its value is always fluctuating.

The future of Chainlink: Price prediction

Chainlink and LINK may be relatively a new decentralised blockchain oracle network and token, respectively, but their tech innovation and value are hitting off in the digital world. As of February 2022, Bank of America reported that the token was the 22nd largest digital currency by market value. Now, experts foresee that Chainlink crypto prediction will hit above $35 at the end of 2024 and $55 by the first half of 2025.
